Controlled Substance Diversion by Anesthesia Personnel

A seminar designed specifically for Anesthesiologists and CRNAs.

Objectives

It has been our experience that a certain percentage of health care professionals who have access to controlled substances, abuse them.  That small percentage includes Anesthesiologists and CRNAs who have access to extremely addictive drugs such as fentanyl, sufentanil and other opiates.  We consider drug addiction an occupational hazard among health care professionals.

Anesthesiologists and CRNAs cannot consistently divert drugs if an institution has adequate physical security and an effective record keeping system with a comprehensive audit trail.  Most health care professionals are unaware of the magnitude of the legal hazards associated with failing to provide adequate security and maintain complete and accurate records.

This program will examine federal and state laws surrounding controlled substance record keeping, security and accountability pertaining to the practice of Anesthesia.  You will learn how controlled substances are diverted and the health care institution's exposure relating to such diversion.  Common controlled substance record keeping and security problems will be reviewed and different inventory systems and methods to tighten controls surrounding the accountability of controlled substances in the operating room will be examined.
